Did you know that the world's oldest vegetarian restaurant is in Zurich? I did, but then I am also in the habit of researching the best vegan and vegetarian restaurants in the cities that I travel to (Happy Cow, I love you!).
So, back to the restaurant…
I was in Zurich to meet up with my Australian friend Azheem, who is currently travelling around Europe. Azheem is neither vegan nor vegetarian, however when I learned that such a restaurant existed I had absolutely no hesitation in booking us a table for dinner without asking him.
Worst. Friend. Ever.
The restaurant in question is called Hiltl. According to the Guinness Book of World Records it the oldest vegetarian restaurant in the world, having been in operation since 1896. It is now managed by the fourth generation of the Hiltl family, and in addition to the restaurant also features a bar, club, cooking studio and shop .
I kept thinking it was funny to refer to it as Hitler for cheap comedic appeal (but is that even funny??). This led me to learn from my friend Suzanne that Hitler was actually vegetarian. This fact intrigued me very much.
And people, it’s a buffet!
Basically you pick up a plate, pile that plate as high as you can with the delicious vegan and vegetarian dishes on offer, and pay by weight. Optional: if you fancy dessert, repeat as required.
After much squealing and running down the aisles gawking at the selection, I told Azheem to calm down for God sake. Jooooookes, it was actually me who was squealing, and Azheem who was too polite to pretend he didn’t know me.
As I was saying, after much acting like a completely crazy person, I made my choice and sat down to eat. This is what I chose.
This is what Azheem chose.
And this is what I ate for dessert. You will notice that it contains the formerly mentioned Vegan Sticky Toffee pudding.
If you are looking for a dessert that actually tastes like Sticky Toffee pudding, I suggest you order Sticky Toffee pudding. However if you are looking for a vegan dessert that tastes delicious (despite zero resemblance to sticky toffee pudding) then this is for you.
Have you been too any good restaurants lately (vegetarian or otherwise)? Have you forced a friend to accompany you to a restaurant lately (vegetarian or otherwise)?
